Smart Tachograph Version 2 (Gen2) is an advanced 2nd generation digital tachograph that uses satellite GNSS positioning, remote DSRC roadside scanning, automatic border crossing detection, and OSNMA encryption. Use this tool to check whether your vehicle needs Smart Tacho 2 or not.
What is Smart Tacho 2?
Second-generation digital tachograph. It automatically records position using satellite,
detects border crossings, and allows DVSA officers to remotely scan data without stopping the vehicle.
Who Needs It?
HGV drivers doing international journeys (UK–EU).
From December 2024 for analogue/digital vehicles and August 2025 for Smart Tacho 1 vehicles.
UK-only vehicles are exempt.
What is DSRC Remote Check?
Enforcement officers can scan tachograph data remotely using short-range wireless signals
while the vehicle is moving. Non-compliant vehicles are automatically flagged.
⚠️ Important — August 2025 Deadline Passed
The retrofit deadline from Smart Tacho 1 to Smart Tacho 2 was 19 August 2025.
If your vehicle performs international journeys and has not been upgraded,
you are now non-compliant and must take immediate action.
